the river Linge: one of Hollands most original rivers

The river Linge is a river flooding in the Betuwe area from Doornenburg to Gorinchem. The length is 108 kilometer and is the longest river that is situated on Dutch territory. Parts of the Linge are not navigable for motorized vessels. The municipalities Lingewaard and Lingewaal derived their name from Linge.
On the river Linge we offer you a beautiful daytrip by boat (Romantich boattrip on the river Linge), a short boattrip named Lazy Afternoon Cruise , or a 3-days arrangement with a 2 nights stay on the estate landgoed Mariënwaerdt.
Lots of tourists visit the river and its surroundings. Reasons are the numerous fruit orchards and the possibilities for canoeing between the villages Geldermalsen and Leerdam. Alongside this route the river meanders between dikes and is, due to little shipping and low water drainage very suitable for sports and recreation. An other touristic attraction is owl- and animal zoo de Paay ,"Uilen- en Dierenpark De Paay", near the village Beesd.
The route between the villages Zetten and Elst (Gelderland) is only a straightforward canal. Up streams Zoelen the river Linge is an artificial river with an inlet of Rhine water near the village Doornenburg. Despite all changes over the centuries the river still is a natural watercourse between the village Zoelen en the city of Gorinchem. Until the 14th century the water inlet was near Tiel (named "Dode Linge"). After e serious flooding in the city of Gorinchem the "Dode Linge" was dammed.
A remarkable point is the crossing with the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, a main connection between Amsterdam and the German industrial Ruhr Gebiet: the Linge disappears under the Amsterdam- Rijnkanaal here.
The famous trail Lingepad follows a part of the river Linge alongside the villages Acquoy and Rhenoy.
